The Silent Exodus: Why Caregivers Say Goodbye

 We rely on professional caregivers more than we realize. They’re the compassionate souls looking after our aging parents, supporting people with disabilities, and standing on the front lines of healthcare and social work. They’re the backbone of our caring society, but there's a quiet crisis unfolding within their ranks. Many are leaving the profession they love, not because they’ve lost their dedication, but because the emotional and psychological toll has simply become too heavy.

This isn't just about long shifts. It’s about the deep, often invisible wounds inflicted by constant exposure to suffering, loss, and incredibly challenging situations. The numbers paint a stark picture of a workforce pushed to its breaking point, leading to a silent exodus driven by burnout, vicarious trauma, and a desperate lack of support.

Screen time getting in the way of caregiving?

Executive Directors, Administrators, DONs, are you experiencing the same trend as my frustrated LTC client?


She indicated to me that she was noticing a marked increase in caregiver screen time, practically getting in the way of caregiving, especially among the younger generation.


The remedy? The daily DOSE! We're seeing a huge uptick in screentime among everyone. Its become so common. Its especially problematic in the workplace and even more so with the younger generation.


My two-cents: the younger generation really relied on screen-time during the COVID era restrictions. It was for some the only way to remain connected to the outside world. Screen time, especially in the form of "likes" and short videos creates a dopamine hit. A powerful brain-chemical that induces a state of well-being. Sadly, screen-time dopamine is a quick and short-fix of dopamine, the effects wear-off quickly and we need more...hence the increase in screentime.
