Read the white papers based on our research

The actual research is heavy, yet rich with the personal experiences of physicians who have been promoted into leadership roles, and experienced the trauma, frustration, and disillusionment as they navigated the complexities of leadership with little support.

Start here: About HelixMD

Physician Leadership fatigue is not a personal failing, it is a systemic condition with identifiable, treatable co-morbidities.

Learn about our work: the research, the findings, and our solutions.

2

Become familiar with our framework

Our operational framework is grounded in the lived experiences of physicians who have transitioned into leadership roles.  Our framework:

  • Identifies & names the systemic conditions driving leadership fatigue

  • Normalizes that you're experiencing a predictable response to unhealthy structures

  • Offers tools that integrate leadership skill building with identify, meaning, and recovery

3

Diagnose your leadership fatigue co-morbidities

We help physician leaders identify and name the challenges that are most active for each person. We use short, focused self-check tools that function as a diagnostic work up. This provides you with a unique, clear picture of your pattern of leadership fatigue.

4

Beyond the fluff: the art and science of reflective practice

Deep personal reflection functions as a legitimate clinical intervention for physicians because it measurably shifts burnout, depersonalization, decision quality, and professional identity, not just “feelings.” When it is structured and dose‑controlled (timed, guided, and facilitated), its effect size is comparable to other accepted behavioral interventions in medicine.

More research!

We are embarking on a third round of research with physicians, and we would love to have your experience included in our study.

Physicians share their painful journey from the clinic to the
c-suite

“Once you give up clinical practice, the residents wouldn’t even talk to you – they look away and don’t even acknowledge        you"

Tim, MD Family Medicine & CMO

“I no longer felt like my contributions mattered”

About us...

HelixMD was created by a physician leadership educator and qualitative researcher who has spent years studying the lived experience of physicians moving from the clinic to the c-suite. Through multi-year research, CME program leadership, and direct collaboration with physician executives, this work has consistency pointed to the same truth: physician leadership fatigue is systemic, not personal, and its treatable!

When support is absent, the emotional weight compounds:
role confusion → identity conflict → isolation → moral distress → exhaustion.

It’s a pattern so predictable that we built HelixMD to interrupt it.

From idea, to impact

2011 - 2016

Providence Health & Services

System Director, Physician Leadership Development

I was asked to lead Physician Leadership Development for Providence Health & Services, a five state health system with over 75,000 employees,  I mirrored the same Leadership models that I taught as a graduate professor, selecting the most difficult leadership competencies to model.

2016

First research study

At Providence, I developed a two-year Physician Leadership Development program. During this time, I received constant criticism for my approach.  So, as an academic researcher, I decided to ask physicians to share their leadership development experience. This led to the first research paper, co-authored with Larry Schecter, MD.

2025

Follow up research

In 2024, I had the pleasure of meeting Christopher Kodama, MD who was recovering from his own experience with Physician Leadership Fatigue.  Thus began the next iteration of physician leadership research.

2026

HelixMD launches!

Next steps...

Conducting the second study with Drs Kodama and Granzotti, has definitely re-ignited my passion in supporting this work.  In my 32 year career has spanned healthcare, leadership development, and organizational health. I've seen the pain first hand that results from ineffective and poor leadership as well as the trauma inflicted on physicians through the inability to understand human development.

What's next?  Leadership Development curricula specifically designed to meet the adult learning needs of physician's and more research!
